Morimoto Eri

Morimoto Eri (b. 1978) works with time, rhythm, process, all of which are documented and often form part of her work, often diptychs. The number of brushstrokes, paint color(s), types of paint, of brush, time spent to paint, etc. are documented on the work on paper that accompanies and is part of the work. It is as if she observes nature, colors, elements of life and distills the subject into various components.

Her writing to describe her work is concise and precise. In this exhibition, the representation of sand or of mist, with time-based methodology, with thousands of minute marks of acrylic paint on cotton on a wooden panel exudes a veil of silence and invites close scrutiny. Imagine one grain of sand or drop of mist being painted, then another, and another, each one slightly different in size, shape and texture, as if we had all the time in the world to see the work develop in front of us while we remain motionless until is completed.

She alludes to the controlled motion, to the faint sound of a metronome and the delicate substance of the subject or matter through her style and color palette, the positioning of each individual depiction of her subject as an element in balance with a peaceful nature.

Her works Contour map # sand sheet, 2012 and accompanying memo – contour map # sand sheet, 2012, and Contour map # mist sheet, 2012 and accompanying memo – contour map # mist sheet, 2012 were exhibited at Ashiya City Museum of Art & History, Japan in the 2012 exhibition “Art Picnic vol.2”.
